What is powder coating?
… is a type of coating that is applied as a free-flowing, dry powder. Unlike conventional liquid paint which is delivered via an evaporating solvent, powder coating is typically applied electrostatically and then cured under heat or with ultraviolet light.
Because powder coating does not have a liquid carrier, it can produce thicker coatings than conventional liquid coatings. Powder coat is 4 to 10 times thicker than traditional liquid spray paint.
Especially in SoCal with it’s intense UV radiation a good powder coat will last 3-4 times longer than liquid paint.
Why corrosion resistance matters?
Aluminum is the best material if you look for a corrosion resistant, lightweight, modern looking fence. It will not rust over time and with very little maintenance provide your fence with decades of lifetime. Airplanes are largely made out of aluminum due it’s superior corrosion resistance. Aluminum alloys contain almost no iron and without iron, the metal can’t actually rust, but it does oxidize. When the alloy is exposed to water, a film of aluminum oxide forms quickly on the surface. The hard oxide layer is quite resistant to further corrosion and protects the underlying metal.
Maintenance of a aluminum is easy.
- Make sure your sprinklers are directed away from the fence. Hard water could damage the powder coating over time.
- Wash with a basic car wash brush and soap suited for automotive paint.
- Don’t use any abrasive materials or other chemicals (not even dish soap).
- Light pressure washing can be ok for hard-to-reach areas but is not recommended unless absolutely necessary
Why an aluminum gate might be ideal for you?
At Westlake Dream Gates we use powder coated aluminum profiles for a modern look and extended lifetime. Aluminum is lightweight, does not rot, rust, warp, splinter, crack or catch fire – EVER!. Aluminum gates can be designed to fit your needs and allow for gate automation. The designs reach from full privacy (no gaps) to a combination of 1in – 5.5in slats with typically 1/2in – 1in gaps. Sunlight can flow through the gaps between slats, which keeps plants and lawns healthy and brightens dark spaces.
These modern gates can be used in conjunction with posts, can be installed between existing pillars or attached directly to your exterior wall. Usually one gate is 3 to 6ft wide and between 4 ft and 6 ft high but dimension can vary depending on your need.
