Your Local Gate & Fence Specialist in Calabasas

Calabasas

Calabasas is a hillside and canyon community in the Santa Monica Mountains, known for its oak-studded slopes and guard-gated luxury developments along the 101 corridor. Many of the properties here sit near protected oak trees — the city’s Oak Tree Ordinance (Municipal Code §17.32) requires a protected zone around every native oak, so gate and fence placement often has to work around dripline setbacks. We design, build, and install the aluminum driveway gates, automation systems, intercoms, ornamental ironwork, and pergolas that frame those entrances.

Every project is engineered for the specific conditions of the site, not pulled from a catalog. That means a different gate specification for a hillside lot near a protected oak than for an exposed canyon lot, and a different automation package for a long driveway than for a short one.

Services We Offer in Calabasas

What We Do

From custom fabrication to Calabasas permit compliance, we deliver gate and fencing solutions engineered for local terrain and architecture.

Permits and Approvals in Calabasas

Local Expertise
Gate and fence projects here move through two layers of review — the City of Calabasas’ planning and building process, and (in most guard-gated neighborhoods) the HOA’s architectural committee.

Jurisdiction

The City of Calabasas handles gate and fence permits through its Community Development Department — Planning Division and Building & Safety Division — reachable at (818) 224-1600. The city sits entirely within Los Angeles County, so there’s no dual-jurisdiction split; every property within city limits goes through the same review. Fences up to 6 feet generally don’t require a permit, but the Planning Division still regulates height, location, and type in many zones, and any gate or fence near a protected oak tree has to account for the tree’s dripline setback.

Gate Permit Application

A typical package includes a site plan and elevation drawings showing gate height and design, and — for automated gates — documentation of the operator and safety devices.

HOA Architectural Review

Many Calabasas neighborhoods — including The Oaks of Calabasas, Mountain View Estates, Calabasas Park Estates, and Vista Pointe — are guard-gated communities with an active HOA architectural committee that reviews gate and fence designs before construction. We prepare HOA-ready submission packages and coordinate directly with the committee on revisions.

Automated Gate Safety

Calabasas is served by the Los Angeles County Fire Department, which requires a Knox-compatible rapid entry system — box or key switch — on any automated gate controlling access to a private road or limited-exit property, clearly visible from the street. Gates must fully open within the required time on Knox activation, and fail open (spring tension or manual push) if power and battery backup both fail. We build in the photoelectric sensors, edge sensors, and Knox provisions required so the permit passes inspection without rework.

I feel so lucky to have found Chris of Westlake Dream Gates! Am very picky about who I hire to work on my farm. He was kind, lovely to work with, professional and trustworthy in every way. When you find someone with this kind of ethic, and such high quality outcomes, keep their contact info in your "favorites" file. I've worked with Chris and his crew on two different projects now and will continue to do so in the future!

Dealt directly with owner Chris. He is very responsive and professional. Prices are very competitive. The finished product looks and functions great and is so much nicer and more solid than the vinyl gate we replaced. Very high quality gate and hardware. So much more secure than most gates. I feel like I have a side door more than a side gate. I have already recommended Chris and Westlake Dream Gates and will use them again.

Westlake Dream Gates installed fencing panels on our steep backyard hillside. It was truly a pleasure to work with Chris! He is honest, dependable, and very attentive. The materials used are high quality. He and his crew showed up everyday and cleaned up after. You can tell that his crew enjoys working with him. An overall great experience. Highly recommend.

It’s been a month since Westlake Dream Gates created and installed our custom gates (main gate and a second dog gate) and we are still incredibly happy with the decision to work with WDG for this project. We wanted to go with something sleek, modern, sturdy, eco-friendly, and different from the typical vinyl product in order to update the well-worn wood gates we had before, and WDG delivered on all of those fronts and then some. Because everything is cut-to-fit on-site, Chris and his team worked with us during the installation process to ensure we got the gate designs we wanted along with managing the specific constraints that the walkway presented for this project. They were able to accommodate last-minute design needs without compromising the end result. And the end result has been great! Our family and neighbors have been giving us compliments about it ever since the install! The soft-close feature on both gates has been fantastic in that the gates don’t slam shut, reducing the noise that slamming typically makes while preserving the lifespan of the gates—something the old gates could have really benefitted from. Both gates were also equipped with kick down door stoppers, which makes it a breeze for the pool guy to get his equipment into the backyard without banging the gates in the process. We highly recommend WDG, Chris, and his team and will definitely be in touch when we decide to update the remainder of our property’s fencing.

Wrought iron runs higher per square foot because of material and fabrication time. Yes. We manage the permitting process with the City of Calabasas Community Development Department, and we prepare HOA-ready submission packages — finished drawings, material and color specs, and renderings where required — for architectural committee review in neighborhoods like The Oaks of Calabasas, Mountain View Estates, and Calabasas Park Estates. We coordinate directly with the committee on revisions so you don’t have to.
It depends on the project:
  • Pedestrian gates — 1 to 2 days
  • Automating an existing driveway gate — 2 to 3 days
  • New driveway gates — 3 to 6 days
  • Fencing — typically 3 to 6 days, depending on the run length
Larger projects with extensive concrete or electrical work can take longer. We give you a clear schedule with your estimate.
